Color photograph of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, located about two and one-half miles east of Rural Retreat, Virginia, where Captain Thomas Copenhaver worshipped and is very likely buried, though his grave can no longer be located. The first stones in this cemetery are no longer legible. Many had crumbled and had been removed. This church is the oldest known Lutheran church in the area, having been established in 1776. The present building was built in 1916. Photo taken in April 1971.
