Makerspace Facilitator Position Description
Job Title: Makerspace Facilitator
Position Type: Part-Time (Up to 15 hours per week)
Department: The Makery in the Chilhowie Branch Library
Reports To: Chilhowie Branch Supervisor
Job Summary
The Makerspace Facilitator ensures a safe, creative environment by providing technical support and instructional programming. This role bridges the gap between complex technology and public accessibility, guiding patrons from the “idea” phase to a finished product. This position delivers public programs using equipment in the makerspace and works with patrons on a one-to-one basis to support their development of skills needed to utilize the makerspace facility. This position works under the direct supervision of the Chilhowie Branch Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities
- Train patrons in the use of equipment in the makerspace through the delivery of creative programming and one-one-one appointments.
- Operate the makerspace during “open lab” times which will include checking machines in and out, assisting patrons with the design and creation of personal projects, approving items for creation, and processing payments.
- Ensure all patrons adhere to safety protocols.
- Perform routine calibration, cleaning, and basic troubleshooting of 3D printers, laser cutters, and sewing machines.
- Provide “point-of-need” troubleshooting for software (Adobe, Cricut Design Space) and hardware (clogged nozzles, laser alignment).
- Track and report usage of consumables (filament, vinyl, wood, thread) and alert Branch Manager when supplies need to be reordered.
- Assist in creating instructional signage or “how-to” guides in multiple formats for the machines to encourage independent patron use.
- Maintain clean and organized facility.
- Maintain records of patron user agreements and completion of training for equipment in the makerspace.
- Perform additional duties assigned by the Branch Supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, must be comfortable working with people of all ages and backgrounds.
- Ability to multitask, organize, and prioritize daily activities effectively.
- Proficiency with PC and Apple computers, 3-D printers and scanners, Cricut, C02 laser cutter, digital sewing machines, and recording equipment and related software programs.
Familiarity with current creative technology platforms such as Makerworld, Thingiverse, Tinkercad, Blender, Cricut Design Space, xTool Studio, Bernina Software, Apple Studio, Adobe Creative Suite, etc., as well as smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associates degree, Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Strong technology background and willingness and curiosity to continually update skillset and learn new things.
- Patience and welcoming attitude towards people with little or no experience with technology.
- Comfortable with helping others with technology.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working with the public in a teaching capacity such as delivering programs or working one-on-one to assist people learn technical skills.
- Experience organizing and delivering teen and/or adult programs to the public.
- Previous experience working in a makerspace.
- Experience as a creator or maker.
Physical Demands
- Requires regular standing, walking, bending, and lifting (up to 30 lbs).
- Must be able to operate equipment in The Makery and to refill or reload materials such as filament, ink, acrylic sheets, thread, or vinyl.
- Must be able to move tables and chairs to set up events.
Work Schedule
Must be available to work Saturdays and some evenings. Position will also be required to work during some open hours of the Chilhowie Branch:
- Monday: 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- Tuesday: 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- Thursday: 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- Friday: 11:00 am – 2:00 PM
- Saturday: 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
