Seeking Teen Library Advisors
The Smyth County Public Library Board of Trustees is recruiting Smyth County high school students or homeschool students pursuing a high school curriculum to serve as advisors to the Board and to the library system. The purpose of the new program is to provide teens with direct experience in citizen oversight of local government institutions and to provide SCPL with teen perspectives on library programs and collections. The Trustees will select one student from each of the electoral districts to shadow the Library Trustee from their district. The responsibilities of the teens will be to attend monthly Board of Trustees meetings, provide feedback on issues under consideration and on the library’s programs and collections, and to participate in activities through the year. Please review the full description of teen library advisor responsibilities. The program will run from September through May. Students who complete the full program will receive a stipend in May, $250 for students in grades 9-11 and $500 for seniors.
Students wishing to participate should complete this application. The parents of successful applicants will be required to complete this permission form.
