Beginners Sewing Workshops in the SCPL Makery
Starting in June, we are excited to offer Beginning Sewing Workshops with Joshua Blane in the SCPL Makery! Our first workshop will be held on Saturday, June 13th at 11:00am. The cost to attend is $10 per person and registration is required. These workshops are open to adults as well as youth 12 and older. Call the library at 276-646-3404 to reserve a spot.
During this workshop, participants will cover the following topics:
● Identify the major parts of a sewing machine
● Thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin
● Understand how stitches are formed
● Distinguish between knit and woven fabrics
● Identify common beginner fabrics and their uses
● Read the basic information on a sewing pattern
● Sew straight lines and basic seams
● Demonstrate safe sewing practices
Joshua Blane graduated from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles, California with a degree in Apparel Design & Textile Science in. He has a combined 10 years of design experience, ranging from bespoke wedding gowns to costumes for the stage. Post-pandemic he moved back to his birthplace of SWVA to work as a curator at the William King Museum of Art, specializing in collection management that includes many historical Appalachian textiles such as quilts, samplers, and clothing. Most importantly- Joshua believes that sewing, mending, and needlecraft are enduring skills that should be maintained and passed down from generation to generation.
